Explore the Seven Churches of Revelation

Two millenia ago, Jesus revealed himself to the Apostle John. The Word given to the Seven Churches of Asia is the same inspired scripture that teaches Christ's churches today.Join us as we explore the depths of Scripture in the midst of the ruins where that Word was first sent.

Walking through the sites of the Seven Churches of Revelation brings the book of Revelation to life in a powerful way. You’ll stand where early Christians gathered, consider the messages Jesus gave to each church, and see how those words still speak today.

Smyrna

İzmir, Türkiye
Duration1 hour 30 minutes

In Smyrna, a city marked by loyalty to Rome and hostility toward Christians, Christ offers no rebuke—only encouragement. Here, believers faced poverty, slander, and persecution, yet were called rich in what mattered most. This site presses us to consider faithfulness under pressure and Christ’s promise of life to those who endure suffering for His name.

Smyrna’s ancient remains are largely absorbed into modern İzmir, but visitors can still explore the Agora and scattered ruins that testify to its long history. Walking through these remnants communicates the ongoing life of the city from Roman times to today.

Pergamum

Duration2 hours

Pergamum stood as a center of imperial worship and religious compromise—what Christ called the place “where Satan’s throne is.” Visitors can explore the ruins and immerse themselves in the stunning views and profound historical significance of the acropolis and its temples. As we walk this site, we are reminded that the church can appear outwardly faithful while quietly tolerating false teaching within. Christ’s warning here calls His people to truth, repentance, and unwavering loyalty to Him alone.

At Pergamum (modern Bergama), the theatre clinging to the hilltop is a highlight, along with the Temple of Athena, Temple of Dionysus, and the ancient gymnasium. These remains overlook wide vistas and anchor the city’s former prominence, reminding visitors of the intense pagan context addressed in Christ’s letter.

Thyatira

Duration45 minutes

Thyatira was a working city, known for its trade guilds and economic opportunity. Yet participation often required moral and religious compromise. Christ commends this church’s love and service, while warning against tolerating false teaching that led believers into sin. This site challenges us to hold together both growing love and uncompromising holiness.

The ancient site of Thyatira lies beneath and within modern Akhisar. Much of the ancient Christian settlement has been built over, but traces of its past and the surrounding landscape remain visible.

Sardis

Duration2 hours

Sardis projected strength and reputation, yet Christ declared the church spiritually dead. As we stand among its impressive ruins, we are reminded how easily reputation can replace reality. Christ’s call here is urgent: wake up, strengthen what remains, and remember what you have received—before spiritual collapse becomes final.

Sardis features significant and evocative ruins: the Temple of Artemis, a Jewish synagogue, a large bath-gymnasium complex, and remnants of Byzantine shops and streets. The scale of the site and visible architectural fragments help visitors picture the city that received Christ’s call to “wake up.”

Make a brief stop to visit Philadelphia, often remembered as the city of martyrs and the newest of the seven churches addressed in Revelation. Today, the modern city of Alaşehir has largely overbuilt the ancient site, leaving few visible remains beyond a sixth-century Byzantine church—sometimes mistakenly identified by local tradition as one of the churches of Revelation. Yet it was to this small and vulnerable church, frequently shaken by earthquakes and possessing little worldly power, that Christ spoke words of unqualified commendation, promising an open door that no one can shut and calling His people to steadfast faithfulness in His word.

Hierapolis

Duration2 hours

Hierapolis was a prominent Greco-Roman city known for its naturally hot mineral springs, which still cascade today over the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale. Visitors can explore extensive ruins, including a large theatre, necropolis, baths, colonnaded streets, and the remains of a Byzantine church. Though not one of the seven churches of Revelation, Hierapolis is closely connected to the New Testament world: Paul mentions it alongside Colossae and Laodicea (Col. 4:13), and early Christian tradition associates the city with the apostle Philip. Standing here helps illuminate the imagery behind Christ’s warning about being “lukewarm,” as well as the vibrant but spiritually contested environment in which the early churches of the Lycus Valley lived and worshiped.

Colossae

Duration30 minutes

Take a few moments to observe the recent excavations at Colossae, where more than seventy early Roman–era tombs have been uncovered. Alongside everyday burial items such as coins, lamps, and vessels, archaeologists found numerous magical objects, including amulets and engraved gems. These discoveries reveal how deeply practices of spiritual protection shaped life in Colossae and help us better understand the context in which the gospel called believers to trust in Christ alone rather than in fear or magic.

Laodicea

Duration2 hours

As we walk through the ancient city of Laodicea, we encounter the remains of a wealthy and self-sufficient center of commerce, medicine, and engineering. Yet it was to this confident city that Christ spoke His sobering words in Revelation, warning the church against spiritual complacency. Standing amid its aqueducts, theaters, and churches helps us see how material prosperity and religious familiarity could foster a dangerous lukewarmness—and why Christ calls His people to enduring faith, repentance, and wholehearted devotion.

At Laodicea, ongoing excavation and restoration reveal large stretches of the ancient city, including monumental agora colonnades, a restored theatre, baths, temples, and urban streets, all set against sweeping hill views. These ruins testify to a once-great city that repeatedly succumbed to earthquakes and were later abandoned, now being uncovered for visitors to explore.
